TOPIC : “If” (poem)

TEACHING AREAS: In relation to the topic

1. Language for Interpersonal Use (Level 1)

ii- responding to questions politely by giving the required information.

i- Stating what the text is all about.

ii- Asking and answering questions.

VOCABULARY: deal, disaster, doubting, impostors, knaves.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE:

Students have learnt poems before (Sonnet 18, Si Tenggang’s Homecoming and There’s Been a Death in the Opposite House)

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:-

1. Listen and identify the main ideas that the poet wants to highlight by watching and listen to the video that the teacher shows.

2. Exchange ideas, information and relate the poem to their experience and daily life.

MORAL VALUES:

1. Cooperation- teamwork and cooperation in group activities.

2. Preparing the students for real world.

Introduction to the poem “If”

- Teacher introduces the topic for the day to the students.

- Teacher highlights that parents love to advice the children.

- Teacher asks the students what are the advices that their parents usually advice.

- The students are expected to answer the teacher’s questions.

- Teacher writes the students’ answer on the board.

(10 minutes)

- Teacher shows the video of the ‘If’ poem to the class.

- The students are expected to pay attention and enjoy the show.

- Teacher asks the students few questions related to the poem.

- Students are expected to answer the questions by relating them to the video.

(10 minutes)

Exercise 1

- Teacher distributes handouts, which is based on the meaning of the poem.

- Students are expected to answer the questions.

- Teacher discusses the answers with the students.

- Students are expected to respond to teacher by giving their answer.

Group Work:

‘Advices in the poem “If”’

- Teacher advices the class into few groups (4 groups)

- Teacher distributes a flip paper to each group.

- Students are expected to follow the instructions.

- Each group will have to find the advices that are being highlighted in each stanza.

- Each stanza contains 4 advices and students are expected to find all 4 advices.

Presentation on the advices

- Students are expected to write the advices on the flip paper.

- Teacher asks each group to present their findings.

- Teacher asks the students to copy down the advices in their books.

- Teacher distributes another handout.

- Students are expected to answer the questions.

- Students are advised to ask if they do not understand.

- Teacher recapulates the lesson by reminding the students to follow the elder’s advices.

FOLLOW – UP ACTIVITIES:

Teacher distributes handouts focusing on the advices that parents give, students are expected to write on the main message of the poem in a short paragraph.
